A lifelong fascination with Genesis brings physics, theology, and personal reflection together in a new book.
Levi Sap Nei Thang has released The Sky Between Waters: Genesis Through Science and Theology on her birthday, September 29. The book contains 18 chapters arranged in four parts. It grew from an image that has stayed with Thang since childhood: the sky made between the waters in Genesis 1.
“Almost every day of my life, I have looked at trees and water and wondered about creation,” Thang said. “I am still amazed. I studied physics and theology, but I kept returning to the words of Genesis and the picture of a sky between waters.”
The book follows the opening deep, the first light, the separation of waters, and the appearance of land and life. It considers the Hebrew word raqia and ancient views of the cosmos, then places the creation account alongside modern studies of Earth’s atmosphere and water. Its final chapters reflect on order, boundaries, and humanity’s responsibility within creation.
Throughout, Thang distinguishes what Genesis says from later interpretations and from questions science can investigate. She also shares her own reflections on wonder and the space made for life. The book welcomes readers of faith and anyone curious about the ancient account and the natural world.
“This is a book I have carried in my heart for much of my life,” Thang said. “Releasing it on my birthday makes this day especially meaningful.”
Thang dedicates the book to the memory of her mother, who taught her the Word of God and guided her path.
